Why GenY Might be too Frugal by Kimberly Palmer
Interestingly enough, I read this article after I wrote my previous post on being a Cheap-O. A lot of the points made in this article are very true: we have had parents who were more involved in our lives, we have (and are) still battling with the broken economy, and we are entering the workforce at a time which sucks a$$. All of these lessons learned are now resulting in us being TOO frugal for our own good - GenY can't win, man.
I feel like GenY is constantly beat down from both sides – we are selfish, spoiled, and too entitled for our own damn good (a la the generational nickname of Generation Me) OR we are too responsible, extremely developmentally-challenged, and overly financially-conscious. Let’s make up our minds, people.
I have a lot of faith in my generation. Some of us have had the hard route without the support of our “helicopter parents”, even though older generations assume we all had our hands held throughout life. Some of us had/have the support of our “helicopter parents,” but we didn’t choose for our parents to be helicopters, they decided that little diddy on their own. And then – through the chaos and confusion of the 9/11 terroristic attacks, the crash of US Financial markets, and the life-altering empty promise of success after completing college – there are those GenYers that are resilient, that are damned determined to not make the financial foul-ups of the generations before us - that are optimistic that we can clean up a mess that was left at our feet and then blamed on us.
What are your thoughts on this article? Are we all doomed to a slow (and underpaid) path to adulthood?
